Sepia Saturday -- Scouting

It is Wednesday and I am again late to post my Sepia Saturday contribution. This week's theme, celebrating 100 years of scouting, was a challenge for me. I was a Brownie when we lived in Phoenix in the early 1970s. I remember wearing my uniform which had a little pocket to hold a dime for my dues, but I don't have a photo of it or of me doing any Brownie activities. We went on a Brownie trip to Prescott to play in the snow when I was in about second grade. Most of us didn't have real winter wear, and I dressed something like how I'm dressed in the photo below of me with my father. I remember the Brownie leaders had us put plastic bags between our socks and shoes to keep our feet dry.

My grandfather, Lewis Moore, was in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Not scouting, but they were in uniforms in the mountains -- Idaho Springs, Colorado. He's the leftmost guy standing in the middle row. He cut this long photo to fit it in his album.

Lastly, my children as scouts... My son at a cub scout event playing recorder. He is the third from the left. And my daughters at a Brownie overnight event doing archery. These were taken about 10 years ago.

  1. Sometimes I remember putting plastic on kids feet inside their boots when the boots leaked. The picture of recorders brings back memories of our recorder days.

  2. I grew up in New England and I remember saving bread bags to use for winter Girl Scout campouts. They were the perfect size for inside our snow boots. You've inspired me to do a blog post about Girl Scouts, too! Thanks for the memories.

  3. If they’d had archery on offer when I was a girl I’d definitely have joined!

BTW Maragaret did you know you stil have word verification switched on? Most people have got rid of it as it’s very off-putting for commenters.

  4. The bows we nmade for ourselves never seemed to work. I would have given my right arm for a chance to try archery when I was young.

  5. That's the first time I have seen archery practiced indoors.

  6. I remember taking archery in high school. It was such fun. I enjoyed your scouting photos and the CCC ones too. My father was in the CCCs also.

  7. Oh yes, the plastic bags on the feet. I remember having to wear them in gym class in the winter because for some reason they watered the field through every season, rain or not. We all had stinky lockers with stinky wet socks and shoes each day when we were required to play field hockey.

The CCC shot are quite interesting.

  8. Now what are you doing in that first photograph - you are going out, that's what you are doing. Which means that you are not late for the last Sepia Saturday but early for this one. Early or late it doesn't matter as long as weget the pleasure of seeing your photographs.

    1. Love that picture of you and your Dad! My grandfather was in the CCC too, but in Oregon for the most part. I enjoyed the pictures of your kids too.

      Happy Sepia Saturday!

  10. I missed this before, but I want to work on a blogpost for scouting which was a big part of my growing up years too and of my son's as well. Nice tribute of photos
